Algeria declines chairmanship of IPU commission

Algeria declared on Monday withdrawal from chairmanship of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism.

The National People’s Assembly attributed the move to “membership of a representative of the Israeli entity in the commission in contradiction to Algeria’s principles.” Algeria was elected chairman of the group during the IPU’s 146th general assembly, held in Bahrain last March. In the Middle of the same month, the assembly approved as members of the group: Saudi Arabia, Oman, Mexico, Iran, India, Sweden and “the Israeli entity.” The statement said that the Algerian parliament decided to pull out of the post in line with Algeria’s support for just causes worldwide, namely the Palestinian cause.

Algeria took part in the 146th assembly in Bahrain, held between March 11 and 15, when it was elected as chair of the group. Hungary was elected as deputy
