Ambassador Aala: Terrorism, occupation and coercive measures reasons behind suffering of Syrians

Geneva, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the U.N. in Geneva, Ambassador Hussam Edin Aala, said  that the terrorism backed and used by external forces to spread acts of chaos, occupation, aggression, in addition to   plundering natural resources and smuggling them via borders are the main reasons behind the humanitarian crisis of Syrians and their displacement.

“Support conditions in countries of origin for return in safety and dignity is one of the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees, and  commitment to  implementing pledges in this regard would solve voluntary repatriation of refugees,”  Aala said in a statement at the 73rd Session of UNHCR Executive Committee held in Geneva.

He added  that since the liberation of most of its territories from terrorism, the Syrian Government has continued efforts to restore normal life, rehabilitate infrastructure and return state institutions and services in adoption to legal and administrative procedures to facilitate the return of refugees and  secure their basic needs.

The Ambassador referred to the issuance of several amnesty degrees, most notably of which was Legislative Decree No. 7 for 2022.

Ambassador Ala regretted that Syria’s efforts still “collide with” political agendas that manipulate with the humanitarian suffering of the Syrians, and with practices that threaten Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in addition to stances of countries that seek to politicise the humanitarian response and justify the economic blockade imposed on the country.

In that context, Ambassador Ala said that the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the Golan is the main reason behind the coercive displacement of more than 5 million Palestinians and half million Syrians of the occupied Golan citizens who aspire for returning to Homeland in implementation of UN relevant resolutions.
