The Arab League stressed Arab media’s crucial role in informing public opinion, contributing to national growth and development, disseminating information, and defending Arab causes, foremost of which is the Palestinian cause.
In a statement on the occasion of the Arab Media Day, celebrated annually on April 21, the Arab League said this year’s celebration comes in a context of serious regional challenges and continuous escalations in the Palestinian territories, including in occupied Jerusalem, provoked by Israeli transgressions and blatant human right violations, such as Israeli restrictions and censorship imposed on Palestinian media and social media in order to obscure and distort facts.
On a different topic, the statement considered that the Arab Media Excellence Award encourages media competence and advances media services in member states, with this year’s theme being on creative written, radio, television and digital works related to environmental media, in an effort to highlight media outlets’ role in achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in support of national and regional action plans and programs.
The Arab League’s statement noted that the award arbitration committee will meet soon to decide on the nominations submitted, in preparation for the award winning event to celebrate the winners be it institutions or individuals, under the auspices of the State of Kuwait, on the sidelines of the 53rd session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, scheduled to take place in the Moroccan capital, Rabat in June.
