Arab Youth Centre Study Highlights Shared Responsibility for Youth Mental Health

Accra:The Arab Youth Centre (AYC) released a study indicating that 94.8 percent of participants view youth mental health as a shared responsibility involving educational institutions, workplaces, families, and the youths themselves.

According to Emirates News Agency, the study, titled "Mental Health Among Arab Youth A Development Framework for Readiness and Well-Being 2026," was published on World Mental Health Day. It explored the connection between mental health and young people's abilities in learning, working, building relationships, and contributing to society. The study highlighted career uncertainty, family expectations, and digital pressures as significant factors affecting mental well-being and outlined five priorities for institutional action.

The findings revealed that 97.4 percent of participants believe that psychological safety and stability promote innovation, initiative, and the exploration of new ideas. Additionally, 95.7 percent agreed that good mental health supports achievement, decision-making, and the ability to handle academic and workplace pressures. The study also reported a psychological and social well-being index score of 86.4 among participants.

Research for this study involved a survey of 100 young men and women from various Arab countries, 11 discussion sessions with around 107 young participants, and six in-depth interviews with Arab experts in mental health and related fields. The study also included a review of relevant research, policies, and practices.

Eng. Fatima Al Hallami, Executive Director of AYC, emphasized the importance of understanding the conditions that help young people move forward with confidence. She highlighted the influence of education, employment opportunities, clear career pathways, and supportive relationships on mental health and ambitions. Al Hallami underscored the responsibility to help young people manage pressure and engage them in designing programs that meet their needs.

She also added that the UAE prioritizes investment in people for sustainable development, focusing on youth empowerment and quality of life. AYC collaborates with regional partners to enhance institutional cooperation and create supportive environments, enabling young people to make informed decisions, take initiative, and contribute to their communities.
