Austria calls for ceasefire, diplomatic efforts in Lebanon

VIENNA: Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg has stressed the need for a ceasefire in Lebanon and the ongoing pursuit of space for diplomacy and dialogue.

In a press statement today, Schallenberg noted that any attack on a United Nations mission is a clear violation of international law and unacceptable, whether intentional or unintentional, referring to the recent attack on UNIFIL forces in southern Lebanon.

He called on the Lebanese government to take responsibility for security, stating, “The Lebanese authorities must ensure the rule and security of the state in southern Lebanon.”

Schallenberg dismissed any discussions regarding the withdrawal of UNIFIL forces from Lebanon, saying, “Peacekeeping forces are the eyes and ears of the international community, and their presence is vital for all of us.”

He added that discussing changes to the mandate of the Blue Helmets would not be beneficial at this stage of the crisis.
