BAKU: Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Ali Asadov welcomed Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, to discuss the pivotal role religious leaders can play in addressing global issues, with a special emphasis on climate change. During their meeting, they explored strategies to amplify the influence of religious dialogue in tackling these pressing challenges.
According to Emirates News Agency, the Prime Minister expressed his country’s gratitude for the Muslim Council of Elders’ efforts, led by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, in fostering dialogue and unifying religious leaders’ voices against the climate crisis. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s active participation in co-hosting the Global Summit of Religious Leaders for Climate in Baku and organizing the Faith Pavilion at COP29. These initiatives are seen as groundbreaking steps to enhance interfaith dialogue on climate matters. Asadov further highlighted Azerbaijan’s commitment to multiculturalism and toler
ance, noting that peaceful coexistence among diverse ethnicities, cultures, and religions is a cornerstone of the nation’s modern state policy.
The Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, for his part, expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan’s hosting of the Global Summit of Religious Leaders for Climate, underscoring the country’s dedication to acknowledging the crucial role of religious perspectives in global climate efforts. He also praised President Ilham Aliyev for his support, describing Azerbaijan as a beacon of pluralism, tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and Islamic solidarity, as well as an active participant in climate change mitigation efforts.
