China calls for restraint after North Korean artillery bombardment.

Tripoli: China on Friday called on all parties to exercise ‘restraint’ after the Ministry of Defense in Seoul announced that Pyongyang fired artillery shells near two South Korean islands.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said, ‘In light of the current situation, we hope that all parties concerned will maintain calm and refrain from taking actions that would exacerbate tensions, avoid further escalation of the situation, and provide conditions for the resumption of meaningful dialogue.’

An official in the South Korean Ministry of Defense announced earlier today during a press conference that North Korea fired about 200 shells near Yeonpyeong Island, and that the authorities asked civilians to evacuate the island as a precaution.

Yeonpyeong Island, South Korea, is located in the Yellow Sea, 80 kilometers west of Incheon, and 12 kilometers south of the coast of North Korea’s Hwanghae Province.
