Chinese NEV maker speeds up development of AI-powered vehicles to gain competitive edge

SHANGHAI: A Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker backed by the country’s AI software company ‘SenseTime’ is gearing up to develop and integrate cutting-edge AI technologies into their latest products.

China’s NEV market has been experiencing huge growth in recent years, with the sales of NEVs accounting for more than 30 percent of all total new automobile sales in China in 2023, while there are now over 20 million NEV vehicles in use across the country as more motorists choose to go green.

As reported by CGTN, the rapid development of the market has led to an increased number of participants in the NEV industry, making it one of the most fiercely competitive sectors in the country. Esteemed brands are striving to secure a competitive advantage over their rivals in this dynamic landscape.

SenseAuto, a NEV car maker backed by SenseTime, has been one of the leaders in using AI to provide applications like high-speed navigation without consuming too much computing power.

By last June, SenseTime’s tech had b
een applied to more than 60 car models, including those of domestic car brands like SAIC Motor, GAC Motor and Nio, with more than 36 million units having been equipped with these tech products.

Last November, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced a pilot programme for intelligent connected vehicles, with cities such as Beijing and Shanghai allowing the first batch of car makers to test out some of these vehicles.
