Abu Dhabi:Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has introduced an advanced endomicroscopy technology to the Middle East and North Africa, offering a new method to test for food intolerance. This innovative procedure allows doctors to observe how cells in the small intestine react to specific foods in real time.
According to Emirates News Agency, the technology, approved by the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, aids in identifying foods that may trigger digestive symptoms by monitoring cellular responses. This provides diagnostic information that supports personalized dietary plans and care strategies.
During the procedure, selected food particles are introduced into the small intestine, and an endoscope with microscopic imaging is used to examine the intestinal cell reactions. Conducted under sedation during an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, the test takes less than an hour.
The test is designed for patients with chronic food-related issues, such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. It enhances traditional food allergy testing by offering additional insights into unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, helping tailor dietary management and reducing unnecessary food restrictions.
Preparation for the test involves following a hypoallergenic diet for two weeks and fasting for eight hours. Recovery is typically quick, with most patients resuming their normal activities the next day.
Sacha Sidani, Staff Physician in Gastroenterology at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, highlighted the test's ability to provide greater diagnostic precision and personalized care, potentially improving patients' quality of life. Sidani emphasized the risk of patients eliminating broad food groups without guidance, affecting their nutritional balance.
