Cultural Foundation Unveils Second Phase of ‘Skin of Dreams’ Exhibition by Shezad Dawood

Dubai: Cultural Foundation, a cultural centre under the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has unveiled the second phase of the 'Skin of Dreams' exhibition. This follows the initial phase launched on 9th April 2026, offering a comprehensive look at Shezad Dawood's significant artworks.

According to Emirates News Agency, the first phase of the exhibition showcased a selection of film works, including digital artwork 'Night in the Garden of Love (Digital Seedbanks)' (2023), the premiere of Episodes 9 and 10 of Dawood's ten-part film series 'Leviathan Cycle', the immersive VR environment 'Encroachments' (2019), and 'Clifton Beach (Digital Terrazzo) [Black]' (2019). This initial phase set the stage for the full scope of Dawood's artistic vision.

In the exhibition's second phase, Dawood's work spans his interdisciplinary practice, highlighting his paintings, sculptures, digital work, and more. The exhibition is the first mid-career retrospective by artist Shezad Dawood, running until 20th September 2026. Curated by Jessica Cerasi, this retrospective features work spanning over 15 years, illustrating the connections within Dawood's diverse practice.

The exhibition's title, 'Skin of Dreams', describes the cinema screen as a boundary between imagination and reality. It invites visitors into the richly textured universe Dawood has developed over two decades. It focuses on Modernist Architecture and Ecology, where Dawood combines non-Western traditions with established practices to explore alternative histories and futures.

Dawood's work, rooted in research, draws on references from history, literature, architecture, music, science, and technology. His work has been influenced by his practices of painting and filmmaking, exploring the dynamic relationship between these mediums.

Additionally, the exhibition presents paintings from Dawood's early engagement with ralli textiles, such as 'Flow My Tears The Policeman Said II' (2011), 'Cave Interior' (2016), to recent paintings including 'For Minnette (Green)' (2026) and 'For Minnette (Turquoise)' (2026). These works highlight Dawood's expertise in painting, film, digital art, and virtual reality.

At the core of the exhibition is the premiere of Episodes 9 and 10 of Dawood's ten-part film series 'Leviathan Cycle'.
