Abu Dhabi: The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has unveiled the honorees of the Urban Treasures Initiative's fourth edition, an annual event dedicated to acknowledging long-standing businesses that have significantly influenced Abu Dhabi's cultural and social scene.
According to Emirates News Agency, the initiative aims to solidify Abu Dhabi's status as a premier global city for living and working by preserving its modern heritage and celebrating its rich history. The awards ceremony took place at the Cultural Foundation, where 15 establishments from the emirate were lauded for their long-term presence and contributions to the local community.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, presented the awards to the winning institutions, which included Khulood Club, Gulf Pastry, Zahrat Al Khaleej Nablusia Sweets, Orchid Tailoring and Embroidery Shop, Mohammed Farooq Perfumes, Al Jumaira Studio and Stores, Al Yahar Modern Restaurant and Kitchen, Three Star Watches Shop, Shawarma Ala Alragef Cafeteria, Happy Yemen Restaurant, Ahmed Sultan Al Salami Trading and Importing, Al Ain International Medical Polyclinic, Nauras, Baqala Cheese and Pickles Centre, and Al Sidr Natural Honey.
The Urban Treasures initiative, now in its fourth edition, has honored 60 local establishments in total, each recognized for their contributions to Abu Dhabi's urban and social fabric. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak highlighted the importance of these businesses, noting their role as community pillars that reflect the emirate's spirit and inspire future generations.
Launched to recognize Abu Dhabi's landmark homegrown businesses-such as restaurants, bakeries, tailors, and similar establishments-the Urban Treasures Initiative seeks to elevate the profiles of these 'treasures' and preserve them for future generations. The award aligns with DCT Abu Dhabi's Modern Heritage Initiative, which aims to celebrate and safeguard the emirate's more recent history.
The public was invited to nominate businesses for the Urban Treasures 2025 edition, emphasizing community involvement in highlighting authentic institutions serving the community for decades. A specialized committee evaluated the nominations based on criteria such as placemaking, urban history, community value, and physical authenticity, underscoring the establishments' significance within Abu Dhabi.
