Riyadh: The Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadely, stated that with the leadership’s support, the Kingdom is persistently working to reduce land degradation, strengthen communities and ecosystems to withstand drought, and restore degraded ecosystems.
He made these remarks during his speech at the opening of the third session of the Arab Environment Forum in Riyadh, themed “Restore Land to Build Resilience.” The forum will take place over two days (June 3-4, 2024) and was attended by the Regional Representative and Director of the Office of the United Nations Program for West Asia, Sami Demasi, as well as the Head of the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs, Dr. Mahmoud Fathallah, and various environmental experts from the region and the Arab world.
Minister Al-Fadely highlighted that the Kingdom has implemented several pioneering national initiatives, such as the Saudi and Middle East Green Initiati
ves. These initiatives aim to promote regional cooperation in reducing land degradation, preserving vegetation, enhancing biodiversity, and improving food and water security. Additionally, they aim to adapt to climate change and improve the quality of life.
The minister also mentioned the Kingdom’s significant role in developing global initiatives to reduce land degradation and the loss of wild habitats, along with the platform initiative to accelerate research and development in global coral reefs.
After the opening ceremony, the minister toured an environmental exhibition held alongside the forum. Numerous national, regional, and international organizations from the public, private, and civil society sectors participated in this exhibition, which showcased various environmental projects and initiatives and the latest technologies in the field.
