President of the European Council Charles Michel Saturday said the 27-member bloc is “closely monitoring the situation in Russia as it unfolds” following reports of a rebellion by the head of the “Wagner mercenary group” Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Michel on his twitter message said he is in touch with European leaders and G7 partners.
“This is clearly an internal Russian issue,” he said, adding that “our support for Ukraine and (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky is unwavering.” According to media reports, Russian officials have accused Prigozhin of an attempted coup and called for his arrest.
