EU Reports 19,350 Road Crash Deaths in 2025, Marking Decrease Since 2019

Brussels:The European Commission has announced that road fatalities in the EU totaled 19,350 in the year 2025. This figure indicates a 3% decrease from 2024 and a 15% reduction from 2019. The decrease translates to 580 fewer deaths compared to 2024, and 3,400 fewer compared to 2019.

According to Wam, the results show that Sweden and Denmark have the safest roads in the EU, with fatalities per million at 19 and 24, respectively. Meanwhile, Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia report the highest fatality rates, with figures of 71, 68, and 65 per million, respectively.

Provisional data for 2026 suggests a positive trend, as more countries report reductions in road fatalities of over 5% in the first half of the year, compared to the same period in 2025. The European Commission plans to continue monitoring these trends and support Member States in mitigating emerging concerns.

Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, emphasized the importance of road safety, stating that the goal is to ensure safe travel for all citizens in the EU. The upcoming 2026 EU Road Safety Conference in Brussels on November 23 will highlight the continent's efforts in halving road deaths and serious injuries by 2030, and the Excellence in Road Safety Awards will recognize outstanding initiatives.
