Brussels: The European Commission has introduced a comprehensive set of proposals aimed at preventing and countering terrorism across Europe. These initiatives are designed to bolster Europe's collective response to the evolving threats of terrorism and violent extremism.
According to Emirates News Agency, the European Union has spent the past decade strengthening its measures against terrorism and violent extremism. Despite these efforts, the nature of these threats continues to evolve, largely due to the misuse of new technologies. This misuse has led to the reshaping of terrorist activities, with minors increasingly being targeted and radicalized online. Additionally, geopolitical developments have further exacerbated the threat landscape, necessitating a stronger and more adaptive response.
The Commission outlined several initiatives to enhance preparedness and response efforts. Among the key actions are boosting intelligence analysis at the EU level, reinforcing Europol's analytical support capacities, and strengthening security research on emerging technologies. A significant focus is on preventing radicalization through a prevention toolbox and a £5 million community engagement and empowerment program dedicated to early prevention projects.
In terms of protecting individuals online, the proposals include revising the Terrorist Content Online Regulation, enforcing the Digital Services Act, and enhancing cooperation with online service providers via the EU Internet Forum. Additionally, the Commission plans to upgrade the EU crisis protocol into a comprehensive online crisis response framework for improved cooperation.
To safeguard people in physical environments, the Commission aims to enhance information sharing on terrorism-related alerts, explore options to expand the framework on advanced travel information, and invest £30 million in strengthening the security of public spaces and critical infrastructure. This includes bolstering the EU protective security advisory program.
The response to threats and attacks will include improving the tracking of terrorist financing, revising the mandates of Europol and Eurojust, and implementing a roadmap for lawful and effective access to data for law enforcement purposes. Furthermore, the Commission seeks to enhance cooperation with international partners, strengthening Europol and Eurojust's external counterterrorism collaborations and working closely with trusted partners to gather data on individuals posing a terrorist threat.
These proposals are integral to the ProtectEU European internal security strategy and were presented alongside a proposal to combat firearms trafficking.
