European Parliament Urges EU to List Houthis as Terrorists

Brussels:The European Parliament has called on the Council of the European Union to designate the Houthi movement, including its military and political factions, as a terrorist organization. This request follows a proposal by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

According to Wam, the resolution, adopted on Thursday, also demands the freezing of all assets and economic resources linked to the Houthis and their affiliates, as well as the dismantling of financial channels supporting the movement.

The resolution was issued amid growing threats from the Houthis, with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) condemning their attacks against Saudi Arabia, military actions in Yemen, and missile and drone strikes against the United Arab Emirates and Israel over recent years.

In addition, the European Parliament condemned attacks on commercial shipping and energy infrastructure in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait by the Houthis, warning that such actions are increasing energy prices and harming the competitiveness of the European economy.

Regarding regional security, the Parliament strongly criticized the Iranian regime for its destabilizing role in supplying the Houthis with weapons and financial support. It also denounced the coordination between the Houthis, Hezbollah, and other armed groups, emphasizing the necessity to disarm militias and non-state armed groups.

The resolution reaffirmed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and support for Yemen's legitimate government, urging enhanced security and defense collaboration between the EU and its Gulf partners.

Furthermore, it highlighted the importance of the EU's defensive maritime security operation, ASPIDES, and called on member states to contribute additional naval and air resources to safeguard international shipping.

On the humanitarian front, the Parliament demanded that the Houthis immediately cease all hostilities and abandon their territorial ambitions, expressing concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen.

The resolution also urged the EU to increase humanitarian aid to Yemen through the upcoming Global Europe instrument, with strict oversight to ensure the funds are utilized for their intended purposes.
