Abu Dhabi: The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) organised its first Meet Your Regulator event of 2025, focusing on 'Radiation Oncology: Current and Future'. Healthcare professionals and radiation oncology experts gathered to discuss current trends in oncology, national and international frameworks, and regulations for radiation protection of workers and patients.
According to Emirates News Agency, participants showcased their organisations' methods for radiological imaging, emphasizing its critical role in radiotherapy oncology, guiding treatment planning, and adaptive strategies. They highlighted how standardised radiological reviews enhance clinical accuracy, ensure patient safety, and adhere to protocols.
Participants also addressed strategic solutions for existing challenges in radiotherapy, such as the need to standardise guidelines and harmonise protocols with technological trends. Discussions included the potential implementation of AI and digital tools in cancer diagnostics and treatment.
The dialogue explored expanding capacity-building programmes to meet future staffing needs and cooperation in research and development. Plans were discussed to establish a dedicated task force under the Radiation Protection Committee (RPC) to coordinate nationally with health authorities and facilitate expert reviews of regulatory frameworks.
"We are committed to fostering collaboration between regulators and healthcare professionals to ensure the highest standards of radiation safety," said Aayda Al Shehhi, FANR's Director of Radiation Safety. She added that the event provided a platform for exchanging expertise and exploring innovations in radiation oncology in the UAE.
FANR highlighted its contributions to developing the UAE's radiation protection infrastructure and its cooperation with international organisations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Committee for Radiation Protection (ICRP). FANR also chairs the RPC, advising the UAE government on radiation protection matters.
FANR supports the UAE's goal to be a leader in healthcare innovation and a hub for medical tourism, in line with the 'We the UAE 2031' vision's "Forward Society" pillar, which aims to provide high-quality healthcare to all.
In October 2025, FANR will host the 8th International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection, organised by the ICRP, where global experts and officials will exchange expertise and strengthen cooperation in radiological protection.
