Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi and Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini discussed Tuesday efforts to provide the necessary financial support for the agency to bridge the financial deficit and ensure it continues to provide its services to Palestinian refugees in accordance with its UN mandate.
Safadi and Lazzarini stressed the need for the international community to take practical and urgent steps to provide the necessary financial support to the agency so that it continues to provide its vital services to refugees.
Safadi said that empowering the agency financially and ensuring its ability to implement its UN mandate is an absolute necessity to provide a decent life for refugees and an investment in security and stability.
He stressed the centrality of the agency’s role in providing education, health services and relief aid to Palestinian refugees and the need for the UNRWA to continue its work until the refugee issue is resolved in a way that guarantees Palestinians right to return and a compensation in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions within the framework of a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.
For his part, Lazzarini lauded the “key role of Jordan,” one of the biggest host countries of refugees and an indirect supporter of Palestinian refugees in terms of mobilizing financial and political support for the agency.
