Ford to Make a Comeback in FIA World Rally Championship

Abu Dhabi:FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has welcomed Ford's announcement of its return to the FIA World Rally Championship with a full factory program starting in 2028, alongside the development of a new Rally1 car under the FIA's WRC27 technical regulations for 2029.

According to Emirates News Agency, Ford's return marks its first full works program in the FIA WRC since 2012. This comes at a pivotal time for the championship, with new technical regulations set for 2027, increased investment under new ownership, and plans to expand the WRC's presence in key markets, including the United Kingdom and United States.

The announcement positions Ford as the fourth constructor to commit to developing a car under the new WRC27 technical regulations, which focus on safety, affordability, flexibility, and accessibility. These regulations aim to lower the cost of competing, with a ready-to-compete car priced at £345,000 in asphalt specification.

Ben Sulayem highlighted the significance of this development for the FIA World Rally Championship. With a new promoter and now Ford joining as a full works manufacturer, there is considerable momentum for the championship's future. He noted Ford's extensive involvement in various FIA World Championships, emphasizing its commitment to motorsport as a platform for brand and technology development.

Starting in 2028, Ford Racing will participate directly in its FIA WRC program, working alongside its long-time partner M-Sport, before launching an all-new Rally1 car in 2029. This commitment underlines the growing appeal of the FIA World Rally Championship to global automotive manufacturers.

Jim Baumbick, President of Ford Europe, expressed that rallying challenges Ford's character and connects fans with the thrill of the sport. He stated that Ford aims for its next generation of European vehicles to embody a spirit that is responsive, confidence-inspiring, and rewarding to drive.
