France and Germany Urge EU for New Trade Defense Tool

Brussels:French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have jointly urged the European Commission to establish a new legal instrument aimed at allowing the European Union to respond quickly and effectively to trade conflicts and unfair competitive practices affecting the European market.

According to Emirates News Agency, Macron and Merz addressed a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, advocating for a 'credible instrument.' This tool would empower the Commission to implement strong measures against third countries, potentially including their exclusion from the EU single market if necessary.

The leaders also suggested enhancing the decision-making process to be faster and more adaptable, enabling measures to be automatically activated unless opposed by a qualified majority of EU member states.
