German Foreign Ministry: Jordan And Iraq Canceled Flights To Belarus To Stop Flow Of Immigration

Baghdad The German Foreign Ministry said on Friday that talks with Iraq to stop migrants’ flights to Belarus were successful, adding that Jordan has also canceled a number of charter flights to Belarus.

The German authorities have recorded 4,889 illegal arrivals through Belarus in October so far, which represents more than half of all arrivals this year.

Thousands from Syria, Iraq and other conflict-torn countries have arrived in Belarus in recent months, hoping to cross into neighboring Poland, and from there many are seeking asylum in other European Union countries, such as Germany.

Brussels accused Belarus of helping migrants enter the European Union, to put pressure on the European Union, which imposed sanctions on the government of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
