Gulf Legislative Leaders and European Parliament President Issue Joint Statement on Regional and Global Challenges

Abu Dhabi: At the conclusion of the 18th periodic meeting, hosted today by the Federal National Council (FNC) in Abu Dhabi under the chairmanship of Saqr Ghobash, the presidents of the Shura, Representative, National, and Nation Councils of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, along with the President of the European Parliament, issued a joint statement.

According to Emirates News Agency, the statement emphasized the urgency of de-escalation and conflict containment in light of the current military developments in the Arabian Gulf. It highlighted the importance of prudent diplomacy and dialogue as means of preserving regional and international security and stability.

The statement stressed the need for intensified joint efforts to create collaborative frameworks to tackle global challenges such as climate change, energy security, sustainable development, combating terrorism and extremism, and promoting universal human values of coexistence and tolerance.

The GCC legislative leaders and the President of the European Parliament expressed their gratitude to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the hospitality and welcome, which contributed to the success of the meeting. They also thanked the UAE government and people, and the Federal National Council, for their invitation and organization of the meeting.

The participants praised the strong relations and strategic partnership between the GCC countries and the European Union. They highlighted mutual respect, cooperation, and shared interests as key factors bolstering security, stability, development, and prosperity.

The leaders reaffirmed the importance of the first GCC-EU Summit held on October 16, 2024, in Brussels, viewing its outcomes as a roadmap for strengthening bilateral relations. They emphasized the need for advancing parliamentary dialogue, promoting mutual visits, and exchanges of expertise on regional and international issues.

The statement called for the immediate cessation of violations, protection of lives, and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. It demanded a ceasefire, the release of hostages and detainees, and affirmed the two-state solution as the only viable path for peace.

The leaders also addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, reiterating their commitment to resolving it. They welcomed the Gulf states’ efforts in supporting ceasefire initiatives, enhancing maritime security in the Black Sea, and delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine, including prisoner exchanges and family reunifications.
