Illiteracy rate in Jordan drops, says minister

Education Minister Azmi Mahafzah said Sunday that the illiteracy rate in Jordan has dropped to 5 per cent, according to figures from the Department of Statistics. During International Literacy Day celebrations, Mahafzah said the number of adult education and literacy centres that were opened for the 2023/2024 academic year reached 177, with 2,021 students enrolled: 1,643 females and 378 males, to whom the ministry provided free study supplies. He added that Jordan's participation with countries worldwide in celebrating International Literacy Day is an effort to improve individuals' quality of life and job performance, increase their productivity, and provide the labour market with qualified technical staff. He added that the Ministry opened adult education and literacy centres and expanded them to include all parts of the Kingdom to provide educational opportunities for those whose circumstances prevented them from continuing their education. He added that the Ministry worked to integrate young and adult learners with disabilities into all literacy and non-formal education programmes. Source: Jordan News Agency
