India to triple nuclear power capacity in seven years

NEW DELHI: India will triple its nuclear power capacity over the next seven years, Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science, Technology and Atomic Energy, told Parliament on Thursday. Minister Singh stated that the country further plans to raise the proportions of its nuclear electricity generation to 100,000 megawatts (MW) by 2047 to aid India's deadline for Net Zero transition in 2070 India's current installed capacity for nuclear electricity generation is 8,180 MW. 'At present, 21 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 15,300 MW are in various stages of construction to installation,' the Minister said. Answering questions from members of the Rajya Sabha, the upper House of Parliament, Singh said there has been a surge of more than a 70 percent in India's nuclear power capacity in the last decade.
