Microsoft’s AI Tool Surpasses Doctors in Diagnostic Accuracy

Accra:Microsoft researchers have developed an artificial intelligence tool that diagnoses patients through a step-by-step process, mirroring the approach taken by doctors. This tool has demonstrated more than double the accuracy of general physicians in solving complex medical cases, as highlighted in a recent study published in the journal Science.

According to Wam, the AI model employs an "orchestrator" to guide the diagnostic process. This orchestrator organizes the sequence of questions to be asked and determines the necessary exams and tests, functioning with a simulated panel of clinical experts to tackle diagnostic challenges.

Unlike existing medical AI models that rely on an all-at-once examination of symptoms and test results, Microsoft's tool progresses through a structured evaluation. It begins by inquiring about the patient's history and significant physical exam details, subsequently deciding on tests to order and interpreting their results, adjusting its hypotheses and plans accordingly.

The AI's diagnostic orchestrator was put to the test with over 300 unusual and complex medical cases. It outperformed general physicians by more than twice the accuracy, especially when compared to human doctors using textbooks and the internet. This tool also excelled when handling scenarios based on emergency room admission data.

Harsha Nori, Head of AI at Microsoft AI Health, emphasized that the assessment of these models goes beyond accuracy, also considering the thoroughness and deliberation in the diagnostic process.
