Muslim Council of Elders Warns Against Extremist Threats to Youth

Accra:The Muslim Council of Elders has issued a warning about the dangers posed by terrorist and extremist organizations that misuse religion to propagate hatred, extremism, and violence, emphasizing the need for stronger measures to protect youth from radicalization.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Council stated that these groups pursue agendas that contradict religious teachings and shared humanitarian values, jeopardizing social security and stability and undermining efforts to promote coexistence and peace.

In a statement, the Council stressed that ignoring the activities of extremist networks and those inciting hatred and violence poses a threat to national security and endangers innocent lives. The Council highlighted that Islam explicitly forbids taking human life and prioritizes its preservation, referencing the Qur'anic verse 'Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land, it is as if he had slain mankind entirely.' (Qur'an 532).

The Council criticized the distortion of religious teachings by those who exploit religion to justify violence and terrorism, undermining its principles of tolerance, mercy, peace, and compassion. It also advised young people to be wary of extremist groups that use religion to spread destructive ideologies and justify bloodshed.

The role of religious, educational, and media institutions, as well as families, was highlighted in fortifying the resilience of young people against extremist ideologies, raising awareness about recruitment tactics, and promoting moderation, citizenship, and respect for others.

The Council called for enhanced international cooperation to combat extremist organizations and prevent the misuse of digital platforms for spreading hatred, terrorism, and incitement to violence. It also urged for increased intellectual, educational, and cultural efforts to counter extremist narratives, address their root causes, and promote dialogue, human fraternity, and coexistence to protect future generations and build more peaceful, secure, and inclusive societies.
