Nations Condemn Drone Attack on Barakah Nuclear Plant in UAE

Abu dhabi: A joint statement condemning the attack on the Barakah Nuclear Plant has been issued by a coalition of nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among others. The statement denounces the drone attack launched on May 17, 2026, by armed factions in Iraq targeting electrical infrastructure near the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the UAE.

According to Emirates News Agency, the joint statement highlights that the attack represents a violation of international law, posing threats to regional and international peace and security. The attack raised concerns over potential risks to civilian lives and the environment, with the possibility of severe radiological consequences.

The coalition of nations expressed deep concern over the escalation and called for an immediate cessation of attacks against the UAE, particularly those targeting nuclear facilities designated for peaceful purposes. They urged states to prevent their territories from being used by non-state actors for such hostile actions.

The statement also commended the UAE for its transparent communication with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding the attack's impact, mitigation efforts, and the maintenance of normal radiation levels around the plant. The commitment of the UAE to the safe operation of the plant under international standards was acknowledged.

Furthermore, the joint statement reaffirmed the design and operation of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in compliance with the highest international standards and under the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation's oversight. The statement emphasized the importance of protecting nuclear facilities from threats and called for strengthened international cooperation to enhance protection and resilience measures.
