Panama City:A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck off the southern coast of Panama on Friday, causing tremors that were felt in the capital and leading to tsunami warnings across parts of Central America's Pacific shoreline.
According to Emirates News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) initially estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 8.0, but later revised it to 7.6. The quake's epicenter was located about 10 kilometers southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
In response to the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for potentially hazardous waves that could impact coastal areas in Central America, Colombia, and Ecuador.
The tremors were felt in both Panama City and Costa Rica's capital, San José, causing people to evacuate buildings. As of the latest reports, there has been no immediate indication of damage within Panama.
