Salem Al Qassimi Reiterates Role of Culture in Sustainable Development at G20 Summit.

Salvador: Shaikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, emphasised the UAE’s commitment to integrating culture into sustainable development and climate action during his participation at the G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting in Salvador, Di Bahia, Brazil. The Minister addressed the gathering, highlighting the UAE’s efforts to position culture as a pivotal enabler of sustainable development and climate action, advocating for a culture-driven approach to equitable economic growth.

According to Emirates News Agency, Al Qassimi underscored the UAE’s global initiatives aimed at embedding culture within the framework of sustainable development. He noted the collaboration between the UAE and Brazil in forming the Group of Friends for Culture-Based Climate Action (GFCBCA) as a testament to this commitment. Launched at COP28 last year, this coalition aims to address climate challenges through cultural perspectives, garnering significant international support.

Al Qassimi articulated the importance of cultural
and creative industries, emphasizing the need for data-driven insights to tailor regulations that nurture creativity. He remarked, “Our dedication to nurturing creativity is not only about economic growth but about securing the legacy and identity of our communities for generations to come.” The Minister’s comments reflect a broader strategy to integrate cultural approaches into global climate resilience frameworks.

The UAE’s delegation actively engaged in the fourth Culture Working Group (CWG) meeting, contributing to discussions on critical areas such as cultural property protection, living heritage, cultural industries, and digital technology in culture. These discussions informed the G20 Culture Ministers’ Declaration, offering countries insights into improving public policies and fostering international partnerships.

The ongoing G20 Summit, hosted under the Brazilian presidency, focuses on “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” with the UAE participating as a guest for the third consecutive
year. The UAE’s involvement underscores its ongoing commitment to cultural diplomacy and sustainable development on the global stage.
