Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, and Chairman of the National Center for Wildlife, Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli launched the Kingdom's National Protected Areas System Plan during the 10th Regional Conservation Forum of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for West Asia. The plan is a comprehensive roadmap for establishing and managing protected areas across Saudi Arabia. It aligns with the Kingdom's 30x30 target, which aims to conserve 30% of the country's land and marine areas by 2030. This target is a key element of the Saudi Green Initiative. The CEO of the National Center for Wildlife, Dr. Mohammed Ali Qurban, explained that the plan is based on the principles of Vision 2030, the National Environment Strategy, and the Saudi Green Initiative. It adheres to global environmental, social, and economic standards, particularly those of the IUCN. He highlighted that effective implementation of the plan would depend on strengthening local and international cooperation between government entities and local communities. The plan emphasizes sustainable management practices underpinned by governance mechanisms that comply with international standards, ensuring biodiversity protection and adherence to environmental commitments.
