Saudi Arabia Reviews Final Report of Council Working Group Concerned with “International Public Policy Pertaining to Internet”

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during a meeting of the council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) held in Geneva, reviewed the final report of the Council Working Group-International Internet-Related Public Policy Issues, which Saudi Arabia has been heading since its establishment in 2009, represented by Governor of the National Cybersecurity Authority Eng. Majed Al-Mazyed, where the report is concerned with discussing issues and subjects relevant to internet services and technologies, as well as discussing means to increase confidence in their usage around the world.

Eng. Al-Mazyed – during the meeting attended by ITU Secretary General Secretary-General Houlin Zhao, ITU Deputy Secretary General Malcolm Johnson, directors of sectors, and representatives of member states – revealed efforts exerted by the working group, top outcomes related to the international internet-related public policy, outcomes of discussions that were made during the second session of the group and the recommendations issued, which focused on enhancing security while using the internet, issues related to new and emerging technologies and modern trends at the international level.

The final report also addressed what the group, headed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has realized of achievements that contribute to enhancing joint cooperation among member states to increase the efficiency of using the internet in the world, the group’s adoption of a mechanism of open consultations, conducting international consultations in more than 20 issues related to the international internet-related public policy, and discussing more than 400 working papers provided by public institutions, the private sector, civil community and academia from more than 50 countries.

The Council Working Group-International Internet-Related Public Policy is among the most important working groups at ITU, and witnesses intensified attendance and prominent interaction by several countries, due to what it receives of international concern in issues that it considers. It is also considered an international platform for governments, through which they discuss issues related to the internet public policies and prepare necessary decisions or recommendations.
