Abu dhabi: The Second International Conference to Combat Discrimination Against Islam and Muslims commenced on Monday at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, focusing on the theme "Muslim Communities in the West and Their Role in Confronting Islamophobia." This two-day event is a collaborative effort involving the UAE, various Arab and foreign countries, alongside international, regional, and national organizations, civil society institutions, and youth representatives.
According to Emirates News Agency, the conference is organized by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in partnership with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ICESCO). It aims to build on the recommendations put forward during the First Global Conference to Combat Islamophobia, concentrating on addressing the escalating issue of Islamophobia and fostering dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and respect for cultural and religious diversity.
During the opening session, a speech by Ambassador Dr. Hussain Hindawi, Assistant Secretary General at the League of Arab States, highlighted the importance of freedom of religion and belief as a right supported by international conventions, while denouncing all forms of discrimination and racism based on religion or belief.
Dr. Hindawi referenced the Document on Human Fraternity, signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by His Eminence Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and the late Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, as a pivotal moment in advancing the principles of citizenship, coexistence, and the rejection of violence and extremism in the name of religion.
He also expressed concern over the increasing spread of Islamophobia and hate speech, urging for unified international efforts and an enhanced role for the media and educational institutions in promoting the values of tolerance and dialogue among civilizations.
