Abu Dhabi: The sixth UAE Obesity Conference, supported by M42’s Healthpoint and Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, recently concluded at the Rosewood Hotel. Held over two days, the event was organized in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, World Obesity Federation, and Emirates Diabetes and Endocrine Society. It brought together over 500 delegates, including endocrinologists, nurses, dietitians, and surgeons, to explore innovative strategies in obesity management.
According to Emirates News Agency, the conference featured sessions led by Healthpoint and Imperial College London Diabetes Centre focused on preventing and managing obesity. Among the notable speakers were Dr. Sara Suliman and Dr. Mohammed Al Hadad, who shared insights on innovative approaches to bariatric care. A significant highlight of the event was the debut of the World Obesity Federation MENA Conference, emphasizing the theme ‘Obesity is a Multi-Organ Disease’.
The global impact of obesity was a focal point, with the Wo
rld Health Organisation noting that one in eight people worldwide is obese, affecting 890 million individuals. The economic burden of obesity in the UAE alone amounts to nearly US$12 billion annually. The conference aimed to address these challenges by introducing strategies centered around prevention and advancements in healthcare.
Additionally, the upcoming Abu Dhabi Business Week is expected to bolster support for SMEs, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. This event will serve as a platform for networking, policy dialogue, and collaborative opportunities to stimulate economic growth.
