Syria’s Hind Zaza bags gold medal in AWST 2024 individual table tennis


SHARJAH: Syrian athlete Hind Zaza secured the gold medal in the individual table tennis competition at the 7th edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2024). The 12-day sporting event showcased a remarkable gathering of talent with 560 athletes representing 63 teams from 15 countries competing in 8 sports.

Zaza secured the win on Sunday in the final match against Egypt’s Reem Al Iraqi, with a score of 3-2, who took home the silver. The bronze medal was awarded to Bahraini Mariam Abdullah and Egypt’s Hanaa Ibrahim.

The table tennis competition concluded with an awards ceremony for the winning players and teams. Egypt’s Enppi won the team title, crowned with the gold medal, while Bahrain’s Al-Ahli Bahraini received the silver medal, and Jordan’s Hammadah secured the bronze medal.

In the double competition, Bahraini athletes Mariam Abdullah and Amrita Amit clinched the gold medal, leaving the Egyptian duo Reem Al Iraqi and Fatima Alaa Al-Din with the silver medal. Meanwhile, the bronze medal was awa
rded to the Kuwaiti players Mariam Abdul Rahim and Manwa Al-Shammari and the Syrian players Hind Abdul Raouf and Ibaa Ali.

Nabil Mamoun, a member of the Rules Committee at the International Table Tennis Federation and the Chief Referee for AWST 2024, said the championship achieved unequivocal success across all measures. He emphasised the significance of the diversity in the competition’s results and the distribution of medals across various teams, underscoring the strength of the competition and the participants’ skill levels.

He said: “We are delighted with the wonderful level demonstrated by the participating teams and the great commitment from the players and the sportsmanship that prevailed in all the matches, which is the desired goals of AWST 2024.”

Mamoun extended his gratitude towards H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Sharjah Women’s Sports, for her patronage of this prestigious Arab sporting event. He stressed that AWST has bolstered its status as one of the leading reg
ional events that significantly advances women’s sports within the Arab world.
