Tawazun and Korean LIG Defense and Aerospace Partner to Develop Defence Manufacturing Hub in UAE

Abu dhabi: Tawazun Council for Defence Enablement (Tawazun) and the Korean LIG Defense and Aerospace (LIG D and A) have formalized a strategic collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming to establish a global defence manufacturing hub in the UAE. This initiative is set to enhance cooperation in the defence and security industry by creating a locally incorporated entity known as a landed company.

According to Emirates News Agency, the MoU outlines a framework for developing industrial capabilities in the UAE, focusing on research and development, manufacturing and maintenance support, and supply chain integration. The agreement was signed by Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi, Director-General, Industry Development of Tawazun, and Gunhyuk Lee, MENA President, LIG D and A. The signing took place during the 'Make it in the Emirates 2026' event, held at the ADNEC Centre in Abu Dhabi. This platform, hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, serves as a catalyst for strategic partnerships, driving industrial localisation, supply chain development, and advanced manufacturing investment across the UAE.

Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi highlighted the significance of the MoU, stating that it exemplifies Tawazun's commitment to fostering international partnerships that yield significant industrial outcomes for the UAE. By encouraging leading global companies to establish a presence through a landed company structure, Tawazun aims to deepen industrial integration, enhance national capabilities, and solidify the UAE's position on the global defence map.

Gunhyuk Lee expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, acknowledging the UAE's thriving defence industrial ecosystem as an attractive environment for global manufacturers. He emphasized that the MoU represents a critical step in LIG D and A's commitment to contributing to the UAE's national defence industrial growth. Lee anticipates that this partnership will evolve into a long-term and impactful collaboration.

The agreement underscores both parties' dedication to advancing industrial capabilities within the UAE, strengthening defence manufacturing, and promoting long-term cooperation across key areas including research and development, manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and supply chain integration.
