Tripoli: The final statement of the meeting of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya in the Congo welcomed the agreement of the Libyan parties to hold a national reconciliation conference on April 28, 2024 in the city of Sirte, coinciding with the launch of the High Commission for National Reconciliation, calling on the African Union Commission to continue Support Libyans to ensure the success of this process in a timely and effective manner.

This came at the conclusion of the committee’s meeting on Monday in Congo-Brazzaville, headed by Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, the rotating president of the African Union, President of the Federal Republic of the Comoros, Ousmane Razali, and the head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki.

The statement also called on ‘all external parties’ to ‘cease and desist’ from interfering in Libya’s internal affairs, because it ‘undermines the basic interests and legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people,’ stressing ‘the urgent need to withdraw all
foreign fighters, foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya,’ in accordance with the relevant International and African Union resolutions.

The attendees also stressed the urgent need for convergence and integration of the actions of the African Union, the United Nations, the European Union, the League of Arab States and the international community in order to avoid duplication of efforts made for Libya.

The African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, headed by Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, includes 10 countries: Algeria, Congo, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Niger, Mauritania, Tunisia, Sudan and Uganda.
