The UN mission expresses its concern over the announcement of the death of Mahdi Al-Barghathi.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya expressed its concern over the announcement of the death of the Minister of Defense of the Government of National Accord, Mahdi Al-Barghathi, in Benghazi.

The mission stated in a statement on its Facebook account that the announcement of Al-Barghathi’s death came following his arrest by the authorities on October 7 along with dozens of others, including a number of his family members.

The mission explained that the death of seven detainees, including Al-Barghathi and one of his sons, has been confirmed, with disturbing allegations about ill-treatment and torture during detention, noting that the causes of death are still unclear due to limited official information, according to the statement.

The mission added that reports indicate that forty other people are still missing.

The mission called on the competent Libyan authorities to conduct an independent and transparent investigation into the deaths and to provide information about the fate of the people who are
still missing.
