Transport Ministry discusses impact of shipping crisis on traffic to and from Aqaba

Amman: Minister of Transport Wesam Tahtamouni chaired a meeting Monday to discuss developments in shipping to and from the Red Sea port of Aqaba and the impact of the international navigation crisis on economic sectors.

The meeting was attended by Ministry of Industry and Trade Secretary-General, Dana Al-Zoubi, Deputy Chairman of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) board of Commissioners, Hamza Haj Hassan, Director-General of the Aqaba Development Company, Hussein Al-Safadi as well as representatives of the Jordan Shipping Association, the Customs Department, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Truck Owners Syndicate, and the Jordanian Logistics Association.

Tahtamouni reviewed measures taken by the government to mitigate the current crisis and enhance cooperation with the private sector to identify impediments and come up with solutions.

The officials pointed to signs that shipping will go back to normal, and that coalitions will be formed between shipping firms connecting with the po
rt of Aqaba and the provision of greater services for feeding ships.

They expectated a larger number of incoming containers according to shipping lines’ estimates and Aqaba Container Port records.

The attendees agreed to continue coordination between all parties to identify obstacles and come up with solutions and address complaints by of the various industrial and commercial sectors resulting from the crisis.
