Typhoon Trami makes landfall in central Vietnam

Typhoon Trami, the sixth to hit the East Sea this year, made landfall in the central localities of Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang and Quang Nam at about 1 pm on 27th October, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported. According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the maximum wind speed near the centre of the storm reached level 8 (62-74 km per hour), with gusts up to level 10. Gales pulled down many trees on Da Nang streets, including Quang Trung and Nguyen Van Linh. Roofs of some buildings were also blown off, exposing structures and objects inside. In Thua Thien-Hue, storm surges caused water to invade Phu Thuan commune of Phu Vang district. Sea level rose by around 0.5 m, and waves have eroded the banks 50 m into the land over the past few days. The meteorological agency warned of a high risk of flooding in low-lying coastal areas, as well as the possibility of dyke and embankment erosion along the coast from Quang Tri to Quang Nam. Before landing in th e central Vietnam, Trami swept through northwestern Philippines on October 25, leaving at least 85 people dead and 41 others missing.. Source: Emirates News Agency
