The Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, said that Libyans want to elect their leaders, restore legitimacy to their institutions, and end the endless transitional stages.
This came during her remark at a high-level session held by the UN Secretary Council last Thursday to discuss cooperation between the UN and the League of Arab States, according to the UN website.
DiCarlo stressed that the international community, in this context, needs to remain “united” in the coming weeks and months to hold elections in Libya by the end of 2023.
DiCarlo welcomed the decision of the Arab Summit on the developments in Libya, considering that this is evidence of the participation of the Arab League in resolving the issue, especially as it is a member of the Libyan Quartet alongside the UN.
In particular, DiCarlo commended the League’s “expression of support for the United Nations’ ongoing efforts to find a political solution for Libya.”
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Arab League discussed the need for the international community to move to provide support to the Libyan people in a manner that preserves Libya’s unity, sovereignty, security, and stability, calling on the Libyan parties to overcome obstacles that prevent the holding of electoral entitlements and stressing the League’s continuation to support the efforts of the UN in Libya, including making progress in the political process, economic and security reforms, and respect for international humanitarian law.
In a report, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the continued participation of the Quartet on Libya, consisting of the European Union, the African Union, the League of Arab States, and the UN, within the framework of the Berlin process and the Libyan political dialogue facilitated by the UN.
