Abu dhabi: The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is set to convene its 48th session in Busan, Republic of Korea, from July 20 to 29, 2026, following an opening ceremony on July 19. The committee will assess nominations for the inscription of 30 new sites to the prestigious World Heritage List and deliberate on proposals related to three existing sites. Additionally, the state of conservation of 147 sites already on the list will be reviewed.
According to Emirates News Agency, the World Heritage List currently includes 1,248 sites from 170 countries. These sites, acknowledged for their Outstanding Universal Value, receive UNESCO World Heritage status which aims to protect and preserve them for future generations. This status encourages member states to ensure the sustainable management, restoration, and conservation of these iconic locations.
The designation as a World Heritage site significantly boosts the development of responsible tourism, providing economic benefits to local communities and increasing public awareness about the importance of cultural diversity. Furthermore, the listed sites have demonstrated their effectiveness in safeguarding natural heritage and biodiversity over the long term.
