Geneva: ‘For children of Lebanon, it has become silent normalisation of horror,’ stated UNICEF in a recent briefing.
According to Emirates News Agency, despite more than 200 children being killed in Lebanon in less than two months, a troubling trend has emerged where these tragic deaths receive little action from those who have the power to halt the violence. UNICEF Spokesperson James Elder emphasized this alarming situation during a press briefing in Geneva.
Elder highlighted the grim reality faced by Lebanese children, drawing parallels to the situation in Gaza, and expressed hope that humanity would never again witness such levels of child casualties. He noted the chilling similarities in the experiences of children in both regions.
The humanitarian crisis has rendered hundreds of thousands of children homeless in Lebanon. Elder pointed out that although there were attempts in early November to reopen some schools for Lebanese children, these efforts were thwarted by widespread attacks over the weekend,
leading to the closure of all educational institutions once again.
The persistent violence and its impact on children call for urgent attention and intervention from the international community to prevent further normalisation of such horrors.
