Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United States of America have issued a joint statement to restore peace and security in Sudan. The collaboration, known as the QUAD, aims to address the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis and poses risks to regional peace.
According to Emirates News Agency, the ministers from the involved nations, at the invitation of the United States, engaged in detailed consultations emphasizing Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity as critical for peace and stability. The leaders agreed that a military solution is not viable and highlighted the urgent need for unhindered humanitarian access throughout Sudan. They called for a humanitarian truce lasting three months to facilitate the entry of aid, aiming for a permanent ceasefire and an inclusive transition process to establish a civilian-led government in Sudan.
Furthermore, the statement emphasized that Sudan’s governance should be determined by its people, free from external influence, particularly from violent extremist groups. The ministers expressed their readiness to follow up on the implementation of these commitments and highlighted the necessity of ending external military support to the conflict parties to prevent further regional instability.
In their commitment to resolving the conflict, the ministers pledged to support a negotiated settlement involving all relevant parties and to ensure the protection of civilians and infrastructure. They also aimed to promote the security of the Red Sea region and counteract transnational security threats, particularly from terrorist organizations.
The ministers underscored their dedication to restoring peace in Sudan and expressed their willingness to work with African and Arab states, the United Nations, and international partners. They discussed the importance of galvanizing the international community for humanitarian and recovery efforts and expressed support for the initiatives led by Saudi Arabia and the United States through the Jeddah process to achieve a lasting ceasefire. Additionally, they endorsed Egypt’s efforts in engaging Sudanese civil and political forces.
The QUAD ministers have committed to ongoing discussions and consultations to coordinate their efforts in supporting an end to the conflict in Sudan, with plans to reconvene during the Quad ministerial meeting in September 2025.
