University of Sharjah Launches Leadership Program for Age-Friendly Environments

Sharjah:The University of Sharjah has inaugurated a specialised leadership training program titled 'Connect, Inspire, Support: Leadership Course on Age-Friendly Environments.' This initiative aims to explore how cities and communities can enhance their support for older adults, featuring both local and international experts.

According to Emirates News Agency, the two-day program took place on September 29 and 30 and was organized by the University's Center of Excellence in Healthy Aging. The event was held in collaboration with the World Health Organisation's Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities and the Sharjah Age-Friendly Office of the Sharjah Social Services Department. It included participation from international academics and experts accredited by the World Health Organisation.

Prof. Nouar Tabet, Acting Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, highlighted that aging populations are increasingly becoming a critical public-health priority worldwide. The University of Sharjah is leveraging its academic resources and multidisciplinary research expertise to support evidence-based policymaking and community innovation in response to this challenge. He noted that seeking WHO accreditation for the Center of Excellence is a strategic move to boost the Universitys global competitiveness and sustainable social impact.

Dr. Amina Almarzooqi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, emphasized Sharjah's significant role since becoming the first Arab city to join the WHO's Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities in 2016. She stressed the importance of older adults as active partners in shaping initiatives and reiterated Sharjah's commitment to bringing vitality and meaningful participation to later life. She also described the University as key in applying research to practice and generating innovations for sustainable environments.

Dr. Tamer Shousha, Director of the University's Center of Excellence in Healthy Aging, stated that the center is focused on integrating theoretical frameworks with practical applications to ensure environments that meet the needs of older adults, thereby enhancing the quality of services available to them.
