US treasury secretary welcomes Jordanian delegation

A delegation from the Jordanian government met with United States Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen on Tuesday in Washington. The delegation was headed by Minister of Finance Muhammad Ississ and included Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan, Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan Adel Sharkas, and Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance Abdul-Halim Shibli. Yellen congratulated Jordan on the success of its financial policies and emphasized the importance of continuing economic reform policies at the same pace. She noted the long-standing friendship and alliance between His Majesty King Abdullah II, His Majesty the late King Hussein, and the US. During a recent meeting with King Abdullah, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for Jordan as an ally and a force for peace in the region. The US Department of Treasury has a solid partnership with Jordan and looks forward to building on it with the visiting Jordanian economic team, she stated. She recognized that Jordan, like the rest of the world, was affected by recent global shocks such as climate change and the food security crisis resulting from the Russian war in Ukraine. However, she praised the Jordanian government for taking strong steps and measures to address its challenges and put itself on the path of rapid and safe inclusive growth. Yellen also commended Jordan’s recent completion of the sixth review of its program with the International Monetary Fund, which was carried out smoothly and quickly based on a package of essential reform measures implemented by Jordan.
