WHO Pandemic Hub Aims for Rapid Outbreak Detection by 2030

Berlin:The World Health Organization (WHO) has unveiled a new five-year strategy for its Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence, aiming for all countries to detect and understand emerging health threats within 24 hours by 2030. This initiative focuses on enhancing rapid detection as a fundamental aspect of global health security, allowing nations to contain outbreaks before they escalate.

According to Emirates News Agency, the strategy seeks to provide countries with the necessary abilities to swiftly identify and comprehend health threats, promoting the development of systems, capacities, and partnerships to prevent outbreaks from becoming epidemics or pandemics.

The announcement was made during the World Health Summit in Berlin, where WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the Hub's progress. Since its inception five years ago, the Hub has become a key component of the global health security framework, uniting governments and partners around the goal of enabling every nation to respond promptly to health threats.

Established in 2021 with support from the German Government, the WHO Hub addresses the gaps revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It collaborates with 160 WHO Member States, 190 organizations, and numerous scientists and policymakers to identify epidemic threats and support prompt community protection measures worldwide.

The next phase of the Hub’s strategy will focus on five priority initiatives Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS), the International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN), the Collaboratory, the Collaborative Surveillance Initiative, and the Digital Enablers for Public Health Intelligence Initiative. These initiatives incorporate advanced technologies and global expert networks to enhance threat detection and response capabilities.

The WHO Hub plays a vital role in the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, acting as a convenor, innovator, and resource mobilizer. To achieve its strategic goals, the Hub will require ongoing investment, trusted partnerships, and robust cross-sectoral cooperation.
