DUBAI: Since its inception in 2013, the World Governments Summit (WGS) has benefited from the active contributions of distinguished European figures. Driven by the mission of shaping future governments and fostering a better future for all, the Summit has established a unique model for international collaboration, inspiring and empowering the next generation of leadership.
Past editions have welcomed prominent European figures such as Kersti Kaljulaid, President of Estonia (2016-2021), Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of Malta (2013-2020), and José Zapatero, Prime Minister of Spain (2004-2011, 2008-2011). These leaders, alongside many others, have brought valuable perspectives and experiences to the Summit, shaping its focus on civic and social progress.
Other prominent speakers of the past editions include Ana Brnabic, who was elected as the Prime Minister of Serbia for the third time on 26th October, 2022, and Fredrik Reinfeldt who has been active in Swedish and international politics for over 25 years. As P
arty leader and Swedish Prime Minister, he reinvented the Moderate Party and formed a four-party alliance that won two successive elections. Today, he is active in giving lectures on geopolitical situations, leadership, economy, and European and Nordic politics.
The Summit was also attended by Edi Rama, an Albanian politician, painter, writer, former university lecturer, publicist, and former basketball player, who has served as the 33rd and current Prime Minister of Albania since 2013 and chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania since 2005.
Other distinguished representatives of European governments included Kyriacos Kokkinos, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy in Cyprus; Marta Arsovska Tomovska, Director for Digital at the Office of the Prime Minister of Serbia; María Aránzazu “Arancha” González Laya, a Spanish lawyer who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation from 2020 to 2021; and Ana Palacio, an international lawyer specialising in international
and European Union law, a member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2002.
Since its inception, the WGS has been bringing together professors from Europe’s most renowned institutes and universities, such as Ian Goldin, Professor of Globalisation and Development at the University of Oxford and the Director of the Oxford Martin Research Programmes on Technological and Economic Change, Future of Work and Future of Development; Carlos Moreno, an Associate Professor at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne / IAE Sorbonne Business School, and the Scientific Director and co-founder of the ETI Chair; and Dr. Paul Morland, Associate Research Fellow at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Continuing this momentum, many speakers from European countries are expected at this year’s summit that will take place in Dubai from 12th to 14th February under the theme ‘Shaping Future Governments’.
