Abu dhabi: Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the fifth edition of the Young Arab Diplomatic Leaders (YADL) Programme successfully concluded at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi. The programme marked the graduation of 53 young diplomats from 15 Arab countries after an intensive three-week curriculum delivered in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy, and various diplomatic, governmental, and international institutions.
According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Municipality and Planning Department and Vice Chairman of the Arab Youth Centre (AYC), graced the ceremony alongside Zaki Nusseibeh, Cultural Adviser to the UAE President and member of the Board of Trustees of Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy, Dr. Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Vice Chairman of AYC, and Omar Obaid Alhesan Alshamsi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event also saw attendance from ambassadors, officials, partners, and experts in diplomacy and international relations.
The fifth edition of the programme, themed 'Diplomacy Under the Microscope: Are Yesterday's Tools Still Capable of Managing Today's World?', explored how technological advances, artificial intelligence, digital platforms, companies, and non-state actors are reshaping diplomacy, policymaking, and cross-border affairs. It featured a combination of remote learning and in-person training in Abu Dhabi, focusing on eight themes including the international system, power in the 21st century, evolving diplomatic tools, digital diplomacy, the future of international institutions, negotiation under pressure, and multilateral crisis management.
In a statement, Al Nuaimi emphasized that preparing young diplomatic leaders is a strategic investment in the Arab region's ability to navigate international transformations. He remarked on the importance of equipping young diplomats with the skills necessary to anticipate developments, formulate positions, and protect national interests, while expanding cooperation to serve their societies' aspirations. The programme aims to foster an Arab network of young diplomatic talents who share an understanding of challenges and possess the flexibility to utilize modern tools in decision-making and crisis management.
Zaki Nusseibeh highlighted the importance of understanding history, culture, and contexts that shape international relations, stating that diplomacy requires more than expertise in negotiation and crisis management. He emphasized the need for a critical mind capable of assessing the international landscape and building bridges of dialogue and trust between peoples. Nusseibeh noted that the partnership between the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy and the YADL programme advances the Academy's mission to equip young professionals with knowledge and adaptability for responsible practice.
Omar Obaid Alhesan Alshamsi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, identified the development of young national and Arab talent as crucial for strengthening diplomatic institutions' readiness. He stated that investing in these capabilities enhances countries' ability to address complex issues and formulate positions based on knowledge and thorough assessments of developments. The programme's impact includes providing a practical model for institutional cooperation in developing diplomatic human capital equipped for future demands.
The training empowered participants to apply their knowledge in practical exercises simulating diplomatic work, facilitating the formulation of positions, role assignments, time management, and response to fast-moving developments. Participants' diverse professional and national backgrounds enriched discussions, helping them identify common ground and build an Arab professional network for expertise exchange and cooperation exploration.
The ceremony concluded with Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi presenting certificates of completion to the graduates and recognizing strategic and knowledge partners for their contributions to the training experience. Through successive editions, the Young Arab Diplomatic Leaders Programme has prepared professionals for careers in diplomacy, policy, and international relations by combining academic foundations, critical thinking, and practical training, thereby enhancing young people's ability to represent their countries and contribute to joint Arab action.
