Abu Dhabi Police Participate in 8th UN Global Road Safety Week

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police are actively participating in the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week, a UN-WHO global campaign designed to promote safer urban infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. This initiative calls on governments and communities to implement proven measures aimed at reducing road traffic injuries and fatalities, addressing the growing issue of deaths and injuries caused by unsafe road conditions and motorist behaviors.

According to Emirates News Agency, Brigadier General Mahmoud Youssef Al Baloushi, Director of the Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols, highlighted the focus of Abu Dhabi Police on raising awareness about pedestrian and cyclist safety as part of its strategic priority-road safety. He urged pedestrians to use designated crossing areas, such as bridges, tunnels, and pedestrian crossings regulated by traffic signals, to avoid jaywalking and the distraction of phones while walking. Brigadier General Al Baloushi emphasized that compliance with laws is a shared responsibility that protects lives and enhances community security.

He also called on drivers to prioritize pedestrian safety and remain vigilant in areas near schools and residential complexes. Noting that respecting pedestrian rights is indicative of a driver's awareness and civilised commitment, he stressed the importance of joint cooperation in adopting correct traffic behaviors to achieve positive results in enhancing traffic safety within the community.

The ongoing efforts to spread awareness include field campaigns and digital platforms, using modern technologies to boost traffic awareness among all community members. The eighth UN Global Road Safety Week, which launched yesterday, is significant within the current Decade of Action for Road Safety, following the endorsement of the 2025 Marrakech Declaration by Member States during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety. This declaration reinforced countries' commitment to making walking and cycling safe for all.
