ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi will host the International Chess Federation's (FIDE) centenary celebrations at Marina Mall on Thursday. The torch relay event is organised by the Abu Dhabi Chess Club and Mind Games under the patronage of Abu Dhabi Sports Club. Abu Dhabi was chosen as the venue for the 100th anniversary celebrations as it has become the capital of global sporting events, enhancing its position after winning the bid to host the 2028 World Chess Olympiad. Abu Dhabi is hosting the last stop of FIDE100 torch relay before it travels to Hungary next month in coincidence with the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest from 10th to 23rd September 2024. As part of the celebrations, the Abu Dhabi Chess Club and Mind Games will organise a photo exhibition that will showcase the history of the sport and the diversity of chess practitioners. There will also be a match that will see World Youth Champion and African and Arab Champion Grandmaster Ahmed Al Adli being pitted against 15 players at the same time. He wil l be joined by Grandmaster Ahmed Al Mudhahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation and member of the Executive Office of the International Chess Federation, who will also play against 15 players.
